What is the Church's stand on abortion?
![]()
Indeed the problem of abortion is dazzingly complex. But the principles involved remain clear all the same. "For God, the Lord of life, has conferred on humankind the surpassing ministry of safeguarding life - a ministry which must be fulfilled in a manner which is worthy of all humanity. Therefore, from the moment of conception, life must be guarded with the greatest care, while abortion and infanticide are unspeakable crimes. The sexual characteristics of human beings and the human faculty of reproduction wonderfully exceed the dispositions of lower forms of life" (Vatican II, The Church Today, 51).
Faith does not exclude science nor does science faith. They enlighten each other.
So, a dynamic Ethics confronted with complex issues must leave the door open to transcendental values...
The Church stands firmly against abortion.
Christians come out and defend life as sacred from the very moment of conception. Petitions, picketing, meetings, telephone open lines, counseling centers, information centers, etc., no method is neglected. All over the country, clinics are established to help girls and women who panic at an unwanted pregnancy. Across the provinces of Canada, Pro-life movements appear that cooperate and mutually clarify their approach.
